About Community Outreach

Throughout its history, the Boston Gay Men’s Chorus has infused itself into the GLBT community of Boston. It has also reached out beyond that community into the political, social and arts arenas.

As a staunch supporter of GLBT causes, the Chorus has distinguished itself by performing for most AIDS service organizations in the area; several Human Rights Campaign annual fundraising dinners; various events during Pride Week in Boston; the Fenway Men’s Event dinner and at Holly Folly, Provincetown’s community holiday celebration held each December. The BGMC is also an active participant in the same-sex marriage movement, performing at numerous events and hand delivering CDs to every Massachusetts state legislator. The Chorus has created innovative collaborations with organizations including Greater Boston PFLAG, GLSEN Boston, AIDS Action Committee, and more.

The Chorus has brought its talent to many high profile public events including the gala opening concert of the renovated Opera House, the annual July 4th Esplanade concert, the opening of the David Hockney exhibit at the Museum of Fine Arts, and the debut event of the Fleet Center in 1995 with James Taylor.

In addition, the Chorus has lent its voice to world premier of “With Voices Raised” by Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens with Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops Orchestra; the Inaugural Breakfast for Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino; and at major events for the Proscenium Fund, the American Association of Museum’s national conference, and America’s Hometown Thanksgiving celebration in Plymouth, Mass.

Each year the BGMC donates more than 300 tickets to gay and lesbian student organizations and to people living with HIV. The Chorus also donates tickets and CDs to support dozens of Boston area non-profit causes. Through its history, the Boston Gay Men’s Chorus has donated an estimated $250,000 back to the community.

The Chorus has been invited to perform concerts at dozens of open and affirming faith communities throughout New England, bringing its message and music directly to thousands of people in urban, suburban, and rural locales, helping to create new allies for the GLBT community.

The chorus continues to give of its time and share its message of tolerance, harmony and music with a wide array of the organizations that create a better world.

How To Request Support

If you would like to request the donation of tickets or CDs to support a local cause, please contact us at info@bgmc.org. Because we receive a high volume of requests, please understand that we cannot support all requests. Generally, the BGMC does not provide cash support, purchase event tickets or buy advertising in event programs.

How To Request a Performance

The BGMC welcomes requests for community outreach performances around Boston and throughout New England. Please note that our busy schedule makes our availability limited and we receive far more requests than we can accommodate. Priority is given to open and affirming congregations and fundraisers for glbt youth, civil rights, or HIV issues. Generally it is best to send your request at least one year in advance. Please contact our office for more information about availability and fees.

The BGMC also maintains a pilot project to donate performances to Massachusetts high schools to benefit local Gay Straight Alliances. Please contact our office for more information.

Please note that the BGMC generally does not perform at cocktail receptions or other events that are not conducive to choral music.
